Each work in Iván Argote's SKIN series is made up of several concrete slabs tinted in different colors. Letters, bits of words, are inscribed on the different slabs. The shape of the sculptures suggests that it has been torn from a larger architectural element, and makes it look like a ruin, a debris. The SKIN series results from Iván Argote's long-term research on the history of ideologies, the notion of monument, and their impact on the formation of subjectivities. By creating ruins from imaginary architectures, he offers an alternative history to the one promulgated by the dominant national narratives and official remembrance sites. The fragmentation of words and text at work in SKIN is akin to an iconoclastic gesture against political slogans, which have sometimes been used to instill anger and resentment. Through this heterogeneous assemblage of colored slabs and words, the artist invites the public to open up to new forms of communication that convey more sensitive and inclusive politics.
