Susumu KAMIJO

Susumu Kamijo vit et travaille à Brooklyn, New York. Il est titulaire d’un Bachelor of Fine Arts de l’Université d’Oregon (2000) et d’un Master of Fine Arts en peinture et dessin de l’Université de Washington (2002). Tirant notamment ses influences de Francis Bacon et Willem de Kooning, il s’est largement fait remarquer avec ses caniches depuis leur apparition en 2014. Kamijo utilise de la peinture vinylique qui, par sa faculté à sécher instantanément, fait de chacun de ses tableaux une « résolution rapide », selon les propres mots de l’artiste. Cette technique picturale permettant de saisir l’authenticité du geste s’inspire de l’apprentissage de la calligraphie japonaise pendant sa jeunesse. Son intérêt personnel pour l’écriture créative confère en outre à ses tableaux un aspect narratif, qui rappelle le minimalisme d’un poème et l’immédiateté d’une nouvelle. En associant techniques de dessin et de peinture, l’artiste crée un ensemble de symboles et de signes, souvent formés de touches de couleur à la fois éthérées et puissantes. Empreint d’un style méditatif et ludique, son travail évolue sans cesse dans une direction qui étonne, provoque et transforme nos façons de voir.
