L’esthétique uchronique de Daniel Arsham se fonde sur son concept d’archéologie fictionnelle. Œuvrant dans les domaines de la sculpture, de l’architecture, du dessin et du cinéma, il crée et cristallise des espaces et des situations correspondant à un entre-deux ambigu, et met en scène ce qu’il décrit comme les reliques futures du présent. Ces moulages érodés d’objets modernes et de silhouettes humaines contemporaines sont réalisés avec habileté à partir de matières géologiques telles que le sable, la sélénite ou la cendre volcanique, de façon à ce qu’ils semblent avoir été récemment découverts, après des siècles d’ensevelissement. Iconiques, la plupart des objets qu’il transforme en pierre font référence au xxe siècle ou au tournant du millénaire, à un moment où l’obsolescence technologique connaît une accélération sans précédent, tout comme la dématérialisation numérique. Alors que le présent, le futur et le passé se combinent avec poésie dans ses visions à la fois tourmentées et ludiques, entre romantisme et pop art, Daniel Arsham fait l’expérience du caractère intemporel de certains symboles et de certains gestes interculturels.
