Perrotin Hong Kong is pleased to present “Nucleus”, the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong dedicated to the late Korean artist Lee Seung-Jio (Yong-Cheon, 1941-Seoul, 1990). The exhibition will feature Lee’s “Nucleus” series, which had been his main theme for his œuvre, and traces his artistic development. Lee Seung-Jio was a leading figure among the founding members of the Origin group founded in 1962 by young painters in their 20s from the Painting Department at Hongik University. In the path of Korean modern art, it is worthwhile to note that young artists set out to reject abstract expressionism’s legacy of the previous generation represented by Art Informel. Origin sought for a return to a clear, simple and basic formative language of art, and the primary roots of painting. Thus, ‘Geometric Art’ emerged in Korean modern art for the first time.
