In “Embrace,” Emily Mae Smith's signature anthropomorphic broomstick, often depicted as an isolated figure, here finds itself in a space of love. Joined with another figure, perhaps even its shadow self, the mirrored brooms create a new geometric form in the negative space of the canvas. The embrace here is also that of the sheer garment fitted over the brooms, as well as the artist's oil painting technique, the way the layers of glaze coat the figures in pigment.
