The Estate of Gérard Schneider
"Opus 53 B" was created in the peak years of lyrical abstraction and of Gérard Schneider’s career in particular. Although he was already in his sixties, his intense vitality and radiant enthusiasm permeated his art: musicality, lyricism, and poetry combined to form an infinite variation of the original elements of his expression.
Composed of bold, violent brush strokes over which, or close to which, subtle stains provide the counterpoint to balance the painting, nothing is less empirical than these paintings executed with a broad gesture, which may seem like the result of a kind of automatic writing. There certainly is automatism in this painting, but it's the automatism of a highly cultured artist. In the end, all his paintings are skilfully composed. He was mostly unsure about their final form when applying the first colors, but his hand was always guided by his culture.
