The "Boil" is one of McGee's most impressive large-scale installations, site-specific in each incarnation and comprising hundreds of elements, in this case 412. Showcasing the artist’s signature cluster method inspired by the dense displays of ex-votos (offerings) at a Catholic church in São Cristóvão, Brazil, the work imposes upon the exhibition space by bulging pregnantly out of the wall -- giving rise to its nickname, "the Boil". Blending a sense of bric-a-brac typical to the Bay area, and McGee’s love of bricolage, clutter, and hoarding, the work evokes the diverse, living energy of the artist’s native Mission district.
