At the opening ceremony of the Yokohama Triennial of Contemporary Art in 2005, Xu Zhen introduced his work 8848-1.86 as follows: "In August 2005, Xu Zhen and a group of friends summited the 8848.13 meters of Mount Everest, cut off a section and carried it back down the mountain. On display here are the peak we brought back, the video of us sawing it off and some documents and objects related to the action." The press and audience were confused and outraged. The icy peak from this fictional expedition - 1.86 meters tall, Xu's exact height was placed in a refrigerated tank and exhibited alongside "documentary" photos and videos of the "expedition." Also on display was the art world's profound interest in this deadpan presentation of a fantastical story.
