During a trip in Istanbul, Sophie Calle was surprised to learn that this immense coastal city was hosting many elderly people who had never been able to look at the sea. She decided to accompany them on their first trip to the Black Sea. They walked towards the water blindfolded or turning their eyes away, and, once they were able to contemplate the sea as long as they desired, they turned towards Sophie Calle’s camera. The series of 14 videos entitled Voir la mer, shows this intimate and deeply moving experience by capturing one’s first gaze cast upon the sea.
