Since 2014, and an invitation to create a monumental installation for the New York City Ballet Art Series, JR has been working with ballerinas, creating stage decors and costumes, choreographing and bringing dancers to unexpected places : amid shipping containers, on rooftops, on monuments, or even in a maximum security prison. In that series, JR asked a few ballerinas to interact with an artwork crate inside the Perrotin gallery in New York City. What is the artwork ? The movement, the dancer ? Does art need a frame? A crate ? Boundaries ?
