Aus der Mancha is one of Hildebrandt's "rip-off" paintings. The "rip-off" technique conceived by the artist involves rubbing the magnetic coating of audio or VHS cassettes onto double-sided adhesive stuck to a canvas. In the simplest of cases, it generally creates two canvases, each bearing a positive and a negative version of the same motif. The technique is also a metaphor for the mnesic process, suggested by the memorial dimension of the analogous recording media he uses - in this case, VHS tapes.
