Estate of Georges Mathieu
This homage to the historical and religious figure of Saint Louis, understandably classified as one of the artist’s “Zen” works, features a solid black background on which red signs were applied directly from the tube, in some places leaving only the trace of the metal edge of the tube in the form of thin lines revealing the blank canvas. A subtle silhouette emerges from the center, composed of the arc of a circle with, above it, vivid striations and a circular figure. This composition reveals a marked contrast between the evenness of the background and the pronounced materiality of these traces.
