A Bauhaus Girl
“These three portraits seem to depict three different females: a sweet and innocent girl, an ambivert woman with stubborn eyes, and a woman wearing peculiar metal ornaments. In fact, they're all based on the same person, one of the female students at Bauhaus, Marianne Brandt. She was the only woman to earn a degree in the Bauhaus Metal Workshop and went on to design many of the most important metal objects in Bauhaus history.
I want to present these three portraits of Marianne all together in the exhibition, which seem to convey different characteristics of her personality, just like several parts of her soul, or various incarnations of the same life. In the painting of the woman wearing metal ornaments, Marianne is more like a robot without consciousness, as if it is being controlled and pulled by invisible forces unconsciously, just as we are at many times.”
