NI Youyu

L’oeuvre de Ni Youyu suscite souvent une illusion spatiale et temporelle : le public peut avoir du mal, à première vue, à déterminer l’âge de l’artiste et la date de ses œuvres. Ni Youyu semble déterminé à éviter les marques temporelles dans son oeuvre, en conférant une dimension abstraite à ses créations. Il affirme qu’il n’est pas amateur du “conceptuel”, hésitant même à qualifier son oeuvre comme appartenant à “l’art contemporain”. Depuis maintenant de nombreuses années, l’artiste travaille à contre-courant, faisant même appel à une technique rudimentaire. Beaucoup de ses oeuvres nécessitent un long processus, durant parfois plusieurs années, et traversent un certain degré d'incertitude entre l’élaboration et l'achèvement. Il lui est par conséquent impossible de créer sur commande à la manière des artisans, ou encore difficile de produire des oeuvres sur un thème imposé par une exposition à la manière d’un artiste moderne.
