La pratique monochromatique de Lee Bae est une quête formelle et immersive dans les abysses de la noirceur. Brouillant les lignes entre le dessin, la peinture, la sculpture et l’installation, il façonne son esthétique abstraite pour donner une profondeur tangible et une intensité à l’absence de couleur. Jusqu’au milieu des années 2000, il travaille exclusivement avec du charbon brut pour créer des assemblages minimalistes et raffinés qui, telles des mosaïques, se composent d’éclats ou de morceaux de bois calcinés sur des toiles ; il produit également des arrangements sculpturaux de taille plus imposante au moyen de troncs carbonisés. Le charbon, qui s’obtient en brûlant du bois et sert à raviver le feu, offre une métaphore puissante du cycle de la vie, ce qui pousse l’artiste à élargir ses recherches jusqu’à la quatrième dimension temporelle. Bien que Lee Bae ne travaille désormais qu’avec le noir de carbone, une substance proche de la suie, sa dernière série d’œuvres picturales cristallise des gestes élémentaires aléatoires — qu’il a travaillés au préalable à l’encre de Chine sur papier — au moyen de couches épaisses d’acrylique translucide semblable à de la cire.
