In this work, St. Hilaire focuses in on the spiritual aspect of the ocean. Over the years, St. Hilaire has depicted water loas, or water spirits of the Voudun religion. Her fascination with the water loas La Sirene and Agwe, the king and queen of the seas, has led her to return to these figures again and again. They watch over the seas, serving as protectors. St. Hilaire views water and the oceans as holding a significant amount of history, relating to the middle passage, religion, as well as present day immigration from the Caribbean to Florida, where the artist grew up. Here, St. Hilaire explores a dream-like narrative representing the interconnectedness of these ideas through generations, and the presence of these spirits in the waters.
