Mushroom Cloud Vanity depicts receding cloud forms and a single lit candle set inside the deep space of an oval vanity mirror-like shape. The piece mixes various types of illusionism to create a surreal, shifting sense of perception. The sculptural form of the oval shape is highly dimensional, while the glowing warm light of the candle appears to illuminate the skyscape above and even the entire object itself. Each cloud shape is made of a piece of linen attached to the surface of the wood panel, while the "sky" is carved in the wood, revealing the undulating stripes of the plywood’s layers painted with subtle metallic colors themselves reflecting the natural light. As you approach the artwork, the reflected light shifts throughout the painting with a mesmerizing, hypnotic movement. Close up, the viewer suddenly sees that the cloud forms are filled with tiny floating figures, mythological creatures and innumerable mushrooms.
