The writings in the background pattern of this painting consist of the artist's own poetry combined with Koans from Buddhist Masters that Harris has studied extensively. A Koan is a saying used in Zen Buddhism, that aims to challenge conventional thinking, and be a vehicle for contemplation and meditation. For example : “What is the sound of one hand clapping?”
On this background, two small sunset paintings inspired by Claudia Keep’s paintings (inserted as a Jeux de Mots in the subtitle of the work), are embedded into the panel in two different ways - one inset, the other placed on top. The panel itself is carved and undulates, emphasizing the tactility and trompe l’oeil perspectives in the work. The double imagery explores the idea that no two days are the same, no sunsets can repeat. The work unfolds like a riddle the longer you look at it, meditative and humorous, the double levels at the top, the double sunsets, the double drum sticks at the bottom - double time, repetitive yet unique.
