Here we have a refrigerator and a woman sitting inside it - both obviously out of place. This unreal scene has us wonder how this lady ended up in the fridge. The precursor to this work is called Betsy, which is the first piece Cattelan conceived for a private collector in 1999. Betsy also consisted of a refrigerator and in it was a wax figure of the collector’s grandmother. Unfortunately, she passed away by the time the work was finished, and the family found comfort in Betsy, which in turn served as a memorial. In the refrigerator of Shadow sits an effigy of Cattelan’s late mother. The absurdity of the situation and the obscure facial expression of the woman evoke perplexed emotions and memories.
