Never before this work, had Hans Hartung tackled such a large format (185 x 300 cm). This historic painting featured at The Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1975 in an exhibition of the artist's recent paintings curated by Henry Geldzahler, who compared Hartung's output to that of the last Brahms. He praised the increasingly 'elegiac' and ‘remarkable' character of his work.
The simple composition is divided into two very sober colored sections, with two huge black commas painted with a brush, light enough at certain points to reveal a few transparencies. The painting was made in the studio of his villa in Antibes, and the oblique line separating the two chromatic zones is clearly reminiscent of an architectural element found throughout his new property: the buttress.
Hartung, who was obsessed with signs and traces, never enlarged them as much as in this particular canvas. The calligraphy of his gesture, and the movement on the support, will never reach such a scale anywhere else as in T1974-R1.
