Hildebrandt started working with vinyl records around 2003, and they have featured prominently in his work ever since. His first cut record paintings were made with black vinyl, commonly associated with records. Later, he incorporated records with colorful labels and, eventually, colored records.
The work Ich habe eine Vorstellung vom grauen Haus (2021) is a large-scale semi figurative cut record painting. It features a motif inspired by a Venetian fence in the foreground, while the background depicts a water surface that evokes the Venice Grand Canal. The potentially infinite grid motif in the painting reflects Hildebrandt's strong interest in ornamental patterns. Beyond the reference to Venice, water is a recurring theme in Hildebrandt's work. This enigmatic piece was created alongside Wo das Wasser rinnt (2021), which seems to complete it.
The records in the painting are by the German bands Anne and Paar, released on the label Grzegorzki Records, founded by Hildebrandt and his partner, artist Alicja Kwade, in 2018.
