This work by Gregor Hildebrandt is part of his series of colorful audio tape works, reflecting the artist's fascination with decorative elements collected from his daily life. Using audio and video tapes, he creates a curious geometric version of a bath mat that, on the one hand, is an homage to Piet Mondrian and, on the other, recalls his previous series of tangled geometric grids created in 2019 after the patterns on his father's hand towels. As is often the case in his work, Hildebrandt here blurs the boundaries of so-called low and high culture to accentuate his interest in ornamental constructions and repetition. He appropriates visual elements from his daily life and transposes them into his artistic dimension by means of audio cassettes linked to songs from his repertoire of memories. Indeed, the audio tape presented here is recorded with "Wie wir beiden nebeneinander auf dem Teppichboden sitzen", and although it remains silent, it nonetheless carries the narrative and poetic fragments of a piece of music by the rock band Tocotronic.
