"In this small painting of a figure holding a club, the held object is in the form of a hunk of clay which I think of as generative material. The hunk of clay is symbolic of the process of creating. It begins with a purging of content which hasn't yet been shaped or formed, so it holds the potential to be anything. Here it references birth, art-making, labor and survival. It's both a tool and an unformed idea." Elizabeth Glaessner
