Water has become a recurrent element in Christiane Pooley's work. The material malleability of a single element in nature makes her think about embodied emotions and the different ways in which they inhabit us. This painting started as a grid, which is now hardly visible in the centre of the canvas. The waterfall on the lower part of the image is a place the artist knows and has previously depicted; the house on the upper right hand side of the composition is Pooley's childhood home which was destroyed in an arson attack in 2014. A waterfall pours out from one of the windows. Pooley likes to think about the ways in which our identity is built within a home as well as within a nation, and how these two realms – the intimate and the public – permeate interior and exterior spaces, our personal and collective histories.
