Spanning from the 1970s to the present, Bitter Nest brings together a trans-generational group of American artists whose work takes measure of the respective cultural climates in intervals throughout the past half century, acting as societal barometers and presenting truths at various times and in a variety of expressive forms. The show's title, Bitter Nest, is derived from a quilted series of works by Faith Ringgold, one of the artists at the center of this exhibition.

Faith Ringgold is a painter, mixed media sculptor, performance artist, writer, teacher and lecturer. Growing up in the creative and intellectual context of the Harlem Renaissance, she is widely recognised for her painted story quilts combining personal narratives, history and politics.

Judy Chicago is an artist, author, feminist, educator, and intellectual whose career now spans six decades. As an artist, Chicago has remained steadfast in her commitment to the power of art as a vehicle for intellectual transformation and social change and to women's right to engage in the highest level of art production.

Artists have long been at the center of the demand for justice in the U.S., holding a mirror, to the nation’s imperfect and improbable union. Weaving together a number of intersectional threads — from feminism to critical race theory, environmental politics and capitalism — the artists on view demonstrate not only an awareness of the myriad issues of their moments, but an awareness of themselves as artists, people, and agents of truth.

Nina Chanel Abney’s paintings capture the frenetic pace of contemporary culture. Broaching subjects as diverse as race, celebrity, religion, politics, sex, and art history, her works eschew linear storytelling in lieu of disjointed narratives. The effect is information overload, balanced with a kind of spontaneous order, where time and space are compressed and identity is interchangeable.

Genesis Belanger’s work is characterized by the treatment of objects as surrogates for the body. Sculpted in stoneware and tinted in fondant hues, and working with a wide range of material, Belanger’s work most often takes on human features, made uncomfortably familiar as they begin to resemble us. The artist's psychologically charged imagery ultimately points to society’s progressive, yet stagnant, movement in gender stereotypes and equality as well as critiques mass consumerism.

Mark Thomas Gibson is a painter, cartoonist, professor, and writer who uses modes of caricature, pop, fantasy and narrative to reflect on current American history. Gibson’s political images combine escalation and despair as they subvert the fixed center of our shared narrative.

Emily Mae Smith creates lively compositions that offer sly social and political commentary, with a nod to distinct historical painting movements, such as symbolism, surrealism, and pop art. Her lexicon of signs and symbols — including her avatar, an anthropomorphic broomstick figure — speak to contemporary subjects, including gender, sexuality, capitalism, and violence.

Chiffon Thomas’s practice is an interdisciplinary one, spanning hand embroidered mixed media painting, collage, drawing, and sculpture. Identifying as a non-binary queer person of color, Thomas’ powerful figurative assemblages examine the difficulties faced by defining one’s identity in contemporary society through tactile methods of hand embroidery, and collaged found material and paint.

Robin F. Williams’s figurative paintings explore pervasive American narratives about childhood, identity and gender. In her practice, Williams deconstructs the coded visual narratives of American media in order to disrupt and complicate the gaze between subject and object.

In a 1964 text, the poet and revolutionary Amiri Baraka - Faith Ringgold’s contemporary - wrote about the use of personhood and narrative within contemporary art, “Poems have got, literally, to be about something. And the weights of love, murder, history, economics have got to drag whoever’s writing in a personally sanctified direction or else there will be no poems at all. But it is not the direction that’s interesting, or makes literature or art, but the replaying of it, by the poet.”

All of the artists in Bitter Nest are storytellers, harnessing the power of their own subjectivity to change the stakes, and encourage the proliferation, diversification, and retelling of perspective.
