Tavares STRACHAN

La pratique conceptuelle et pluridisciplinaire de Tavares Strachan fait le lien entre art, science, histoire et critique culturelle afin de mobiliser nos sens, notre intellect et notre curiosité. L’artiste nous pousse à examiner notre propre relation à ce qui est habituellement invisible.

Ayant grandi aux Bahamas, Strachan a passé sa jeunesse à admirer le ciel nocturne, ce qui a nourri son obsession pour l’espace et l’exploration. L’invisibilité, l’exode ou le déplacement, la perte sont des thèmes centraux dans son travail – celui-ci questionne des récits historiques canonisés, qui ont tendance à en marginaliser d’autres ou à les passer sous silence. Il se sert du savoir officiel, en tant que catégorie, pour rendre plus visibles les réseaux et structures de pouvoir, et pour mettre en lumière des réalisations et des épopées historiques oubliées ou peu connues. Parmi les thèmes choisis par l’artiste pour raconter l’histoire de l’invisible, on compte l’exploration aéronautique, des expéditions dans des lieux déserts et des environnements extrêmes, et des allégories de l’aspiration humaine à surmonter les circonstances difficiles et les limites de sa mortalité.

Au début des années 2010, Strachan a commencé l’élaboration de son Encyclopédie de l’invisibilité, un répertoire qui compte aujourd’hui 17 000 entrées et décrit des héritages trop peu reconnus, ou dont le grand public n’est pas familier – personnes, lieux, événements, objets, concepts et phénomènes. Il a repris pour cela la mise en page et la logique de l’Encyclopædia Britannica. Pour retracer l’histoire de l’explorateur polaire Matthew Henson, qui est probablement la première personne à avoir jamais atteint le pôle Nord, Strachan a mené des expéditions dans la région arctique et exhumé un bloc de glace de 4,5 tonnes, qu’il a ensuite fait parvenir par envoi Federal Express à son ancienne école primaire de Nassau (Bahamas) ; le bloc y a été exposé dans une chambre de congélation à énergie solaire spécialement prévue à cet effet. L’artiste a collaboré avec des scientifiques du MIT, a suivi une formation de cosmonaute, et a envoyé l’une de ses œuvres dans l’espace en partenariat avec SpaceX, pour rendre hommage à Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., le premier astronaute afro-américain sélectionné dans un programme spatial national de l’armée américaine.
 
Ses projets, qui reposent sur des recherches approfondies, sont bien souvent monumentaux tant par leur portée que par leur échelle, et sont le fruit de collaborations avec des spécialistes et des organisations de très nombreux domaines. Il s’inspire également de son pays natal, de ses ressources et de sa communauté, et partage son temps entre son studio de New York et Nassau. C’est dans cette ville qu’il a établi le Bahamas Aerospace and Sea Exploration Center (B.A.S.E.C, Centre aérospatial et d’exploration marine des Bahamas), qui est à la fois un studio artistique et une plateforme de recherche scientifique, mais aussi OKU, un projet communautaire à but non lucratif qui regroupe une résidence artistique et des espaces d’exposition, un système de bourse d’études, ainsi que des programmes extrascolaires créatifs.
