Jane DICKSON

Jane Dickson is a deep-rooted and central voice in New York City’s complex creative history. She came to prominence in the New York art world as a part of the late 70s and 80s alternative downtown scene. She was part of the movement joining the legacies of downtown art, punk rock, and hip hop through her involvement with the experimental Fashion Moda gallery and the canonical artist cooperative Colab (aka Collaborative Projects, Inc.) — the collective known for its radical art exhibitions that pushed the limits of artistic categories and launched graffiti and street art — which staged the groundbreaking Real Estate Show and Times Square Show in 1980.

After moving to the city in 1977, Dickson started a job as a programmer for Spectacolor’s first digital light board at One Times Square. From 1978 to 1981, she worked the weekend night shift for the iconic billboard, where she later organized the Public Art Fund’s Messages to the Public series from 1982 to 1990, for which she invited friends such as David Hammons, Keith Haring, and Jenny Holzer to contribute digital artwork. Dickson exhibited in numerous iconic exhibitions of the period such as Keith Haring’s first group show at the Mudd Club in Tribeca, and a solo exhibition at the East Village’s legendary Fun gallery. She went on to organize and contribute work to Money Show, Dog Show, and Two-Suitcase Show, which all sought to break out of the narrow confines of the art world. Her work was shown alongside those of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fab 5 Freddy, Kenny Scharf, and Kiki Smith.

Dickson’s work depicts “the architecture of distraction” — 24/7 cinemas, casinos, carnivals, demolition derbies, highways, malls, sex shops, and strip clubs — utilizing man-made industrial materials that are culturally devaluated, and chosen for their sensual embrace and the resonance of a specific material with a specific subject. She paints on unconventional supports such as AstroTurf, carpet, felt, and Tyvek for their tactile qualities, implicit associations, and textural possibilities. Her work has been described to have “the urban perspective of Joseph Stella, the melancholy of Edward Hopper, the surface of George Seurat, and the reductivism of Alex Katz.” Known as “a painter of American darkness”, her paintings explore their subjects with dark irony, interpreting interior and exterior environments which have become omnipresent leisure-time distractions, absorbing large amounts of daily life and American dream-life.
