Genesis Belanger réalise des mises en scène psychologiquement chargées, composées de versions idiosyncrasiques des objets du quotidien. Travaillant dans une multitude de formes d’artisanat - soudeuse, céramiste et couturière - Belanger crée des installations en tension irrésolue, proche d'un effondrement temporel. Son vocabulaire est emprunté aux années 1950, plus précisément à l'aube de la publicité américaine, et elle infuse ses “tableaux" d’un sentiment de productivité capitaliste lobotomisée, choisissant comme décors des espaces liminaires, tels que les halls d’entrée des hôtels ou les salles d'attente des bureaux. Dans la pratique de Belanger le corps entier est absent, invitant le spectateur à entrer en tant qu'acteur intentionnel. Dans ses scènes immersives, les objets deviennent des substituts du corps féminin : des lèvres pincées émergent de lampes en grès assorties, des doigts jaillissent d'un bouquet et un hot-dog se tortille dans un talon compensé. L'œuvre tridimensionnelle de Belanger, bien qu'elle s’inscrit dans l'héritage de Claes Oldenburg et de Robert Gober, s'intéresse principalement à la manifestation de mythes capitalistes sur une psyché genrée.
En 2021, Genesis Belanger a fait l'objet d'une exposition individuelle au Consortium de Dijon en France. En 2020, le Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum à Ridgefield, Connecticut a consacré une exposition individuelle à son travail et a publié un catalogue à cette occasion. En 2019, Belanger a créé une installation dans la vitrine du New Museum à New York.
