Les paysages d’Emma Webster nous transportent dans un monde mystique. Les lieux qu’elle dépeint, à la croisée du réalisme et de l’hallucination, entremêlent perspectives spatiales et confusions fantasmatiques. Les tableaux sont le fruit d’une méthode hybride associant dessins et sculptures dans l’espace de l’écran. L’artiste construit tout d’abord les scènes en réalité virtuelle, puis elle les orne d’illuminations théâtrales, pour créer des panoramas naturels déformés, à forte dimension artificielle et
dramatique. Au sujet de ces modèles en réalité virtuelle, elle déclare : “Travailler à partir de l’intérieur de la nature morte est comparable à la façon dont nous appréhendons le monde. Il ne peut pas y avoir d’« extérieur ».”
Emma Webster, née en 1989, est diplômée de Stanford University (BA, 2011) et de Yale University, où elle a obtenu un MFA en peinture en 2018. En 2021, elle a publié Lonescape : Green, Painting, & Mourning Reality, un recueil de pensées sur le paysage et la création d’images dans un monde de plus en plus caractérisé par le numérique.
