Charles Hascoët's still life series draws from objects the artist is quite attached to, which find their way into his canvases in different forms to transport the viewers to a particular time period or evoke a sense of nostalgia. A painter of modern life, Hascoët draws from nineteenth and twentieth century painters like Manet, Courbet and Cezanne, imbuing his scenes with the organic and inorganic. Often fruit or animals are protagonists in his scenes, coupled with a contemporary touchpoint like a playstation controller, CK perfume or Listerine bottle. In this body of work, the color and design of the bottles intend to evoke the design and aesthetic of the 90's while also bringing something 'otherworldly' into the scenes. The game controllers come from Playstation, Super Nintendo (European version of the Super Famicom), and DreamCast.
"Those controllers were all used by people who at some point unplugged them one last time and never used them again. Those objects/artifacts are poetic keys to forgotten virtual worlds that are yet to be accessed again. I feel sorry for those obsolete objects and I'm just trying to pay homage in some ways to their former glory," says Hascoët.
