Alma ALLEN

Évoquant des racines, des gousses, des mollusques ou des fossiles, les sculptures d’Allen se rapportent aux vastes étendues et aux formations naturelles monolithiques qui ont marqué sa vie : l’Utah, où il a passé son enfance ; Joshua Tree, en Californie, où il a vécu plus de diz ans ; et Tepoztlán, au Mexique, où se trouve actuellement son atelier. D’autres œuvres évoquent des torses aux membres maladroitement saillants, des socles vides ou des colonnes architecturales déconstruites, que l’on peut interpréter comme des anti-monuments. 
Les sculptures d’Allen résultent d’un processus hybride combinant le modelage intuitif à la main de petites sculptures en argile – un travail qui embrasse l’accident et l’expression subconsciente – avec la traduction de ces formes à grande échelle grâce à un dispositif robotique qu’il a lui-même construit. Il achève ses œuvres en ponçant et polissant manuellement les surfaces jusqu’à leur conférer une souplesse qui qui brouille la perception de leur matériau, donnant l’impression qu’elles changent d’état.
