Depuis la fin des années 70, Sophie Calle fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions à travers le monde. Tour à tour décrite comme artiste conceptuelle, photographe, vidéaste et même détective, elle a développé une pratique immédiatement reconnaissable, alliant le texte à la photographie pour nourrir une narration qui lui est propre. Ses travaux forment un vaste système d’échos et de références internes, connectés entre eux comme les chapitres d’une oeuvre globale dans laquelle Sophie Calle brouille quelquefois les frontières entre l’intime et le public, la réalité et la fiction, l’art et la vie. Son travail orchestre méticuleusement une réalité sous-jacente — la sienne ou celle des autres — tout en laissant la place au hasard.
