Farhad Moshiri, dont la pratique mêle plusieurs médiums, travaille aussi bien la peinture que l’assemblage ou la sculpture. Inspiré par le pop art et le conceptualisme, il a développé une esthétique profondément hybride, aux confins du Moyen-Orient et de l’Occident. Bien qu’il tire généralement ses motifs de la culture américaine de la consommation (bande dessinée, publicité, musique pop), il les réinterprète à travers un artisanat perse traditionnel tout aussi stéréotypé. De la broderie à la calligraphie, son adoption de délicates techniques d’ornement offre un contraste ironique et puissant par rapport à ses références visuelles populaires. Son utilisation caractéristique de matériaux brillants (perles, paillettes, diamants) crée par ailleurs une tension palpable entre la qualité essentiellement figurative de ses œuvres et leur tendance à la décoration pure et simple. Au-delà de son apparence légère et humoristique, toute l’œuvre de Farhad Moshiri assume une dimension légèrement subversive en abordant la transformation de son pays d’origine.
