Les peintures narratives de Chen Fei sont des constructions fantasmées, souvent perverties, qui transposent des éléments de sa vie personnelle sous forme de pastiches soit surréalistes, soit hyperréalistes. Appartenant à la génération d’artistes chinois élevés après 1980 durant la politique de l’enfant unique, son esthétique est influencée par la culture de masse (notamment les mangas et l’anime) qui s’intéresse typiquement à l’individu plutôt qu’à la grande histoire. Un sens de l’humour noir remarquablement aigu sous-tend ses visions égocentriques éclatantes : exposant presque systématiquement sa propre personne dans son œuvre, il détourne de façon satirique la tradition ancestrale de l’autoportrait pour revisiter les canons orientaux et occidentaux de l’histoire de l’art. La qualité très graphique de ses compositions, qu’il conçoit comme des images de films, contraste avec le raffinement de son style méticuleux et porté sur le détail. Intéressé par la façon dont la croissance économique rapide de la Chine a influencé sa culture désormais mondialisée, Chen Fei interroge également le goût collectif et l’évolution sociale de son pays.
