Bharti KHER

Depuis près de vingt ans, l’oeuvre de Bharti Kher procède par allusion, esquive, utilisant un vocabulaire très codifié. Dessins, peintures, sculptures, installations, sa pratique est empreinte de surréalisme, de récits mais aussi d’objets. L’artiste emploie ainsi le ready made dans un large spectre polysémique et formel. Les oeuvres de Kher semblent ainsi évoluer dans le temps, utilisant la référence comme contrepoint et la contradiction comme outil visuel. Ses chimères, ses monstres mythiques et ses récits allégoriques associent des références à la fois actuelles et traditionnelles, politiques et poétiques.

Kher a étudié l’art et le design au Middlesex Polytechnic de Londres. Elle a obtenu un diplôme des Beaux arts en peinture avec les félicitations à l’Université Polytechnique de Newcastle au Royaume Uni. Son travail a fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions personnelles et collectives, dans des musées et galeries du monde entier.

Bharti Kher crée des fables fantastiques peuplées d’animaux emportés dans un tourbillon primitif de bindis en forme de spermatozoïdes ; de panthéons de chimères mi-femmes mi-singes et d’hôtes évanescents évoluant dans des intérieurs aisés et décalés. Avec l’intelligence et l’effronterie d’un savant fou, elle déploie une sensibilité provocatrice dans ces fables issues d’une dystopie technologique et écologique, où machines, êtres humains, faune et flore sont exangues. (...) à travers ses créatures mutantes, Kher révèle le malaise et la comédie qui se jouent lors de ses rencontres avec l’Inde des métropoles et des petites villes.
Les artistes à l’œuvre sur les paradigmes contemporains de l’espace mondial et national se trouvent au carrefour de deux voies : faire écho aux tropismes de l’opinion générale, ou se renfermer dans des réflexions intérieures éloignées du chaos du monde extérieur. Kher choisit de vivre dans l’entre-deux. D’emblée, elle puise dans la double identité qui est la sienne, indienne et britannique. Mais également, elle situe son œuvre dans les interstices d’une société structurée en division de classes et de genres, qui aspire — sans jamais y parvenir — à une “réelle modernité”. Cette dernière est décrite par le sociologue Bruno Latour comme une société “hybride”, c’est-à-dire un lieu où les différences entre êtres humains et nature, écologie et politique s’estompent. C’est précisément le gommage de ces frontières que recherche Kher. Elle se situe dans l’espace résiduel entre extérieur — société ballottée par un marché mondialisé – et intérieur, univers de rites et de désirs réprimés. Pour Kher, la mutation est une technique de survie, un système de camouflage et un subterfuge auquel elle fait appel en résistance aux vieux régimes patriarcaux et pour inventer ses nouveaux mondes hybrides. Les créations de Kher prennent ainsi leurs propres trajectoires à contre-pied, pour mieux courir, déracinées, à travers les entre-mondes auxquels elles auront donné naissance. Kanu Agrawal


Du troisième oeil à la seconde peau : notes sur les Bindis

Le bindi, ou “tikka”, est le symbole de la féminité indienne. Et la simplicité même : un rond rouge sur le front. Un point, c’est tout, qui dit : “je suis femme” et “je suis indienne” Une déclaration sans détour pour cette notion si complexe qu’est l’identité, sexuelle ou nationale. On commet deux erreurs classiques à propos du bindi : croire qu’il indique la caste ou la religion, et imaginer qu’il représente le mariage au même titre, par exemple, qu’une alliance. Deux méprises intéressantes parce qu’elles contiennent en germe une part de vérité. On peut aussi défendre une autre thèse, tout aussi recevable : trève de sottises, les bindis ne signifient rien de particulier, ils sont juste jolis ! “Les bindis sont des accessoires très prisés pour leur charme sensuel et leur éclat. Essayez vous aussi !”, vante un site Web consacré à la mode. N’importe quel marché indien propose une variété infinie de formes, de couleurs et de tailles : flèches, ovales, cercles, spirales, tortillons, zigzags, ornés de breloques ou de paillettes, gros comme des médaillons ou petits comme des puces... L’Inde n’en a d’ailleurs plus le monopole. C’est un objet de bric et de broc qui a largué ses amarres culturelles et qui porte ses couleurs haut et clair.
Comme de nombreux artistes, Bharti Kher fait écho à une sensibilité moderne, post-moderne même, à un univers où des notions telles que “l’authenticité” sont rarement maniées sans guillemets et où la globalisation a rendu les frontières officielles hautement perméables aux biens, aux idées et aux images. Le bindi, motif central d’une grande partie de son œuvre, est un allié parfait : comme elle, il ne se laisse pas enfermer dans des définitions étroites de la culture ou de l’identité sexuelle, et il lui permet d’explorer tout à la fois le quotidien et le merveilleux.
La critique d’art Geeta Kapur identifie une esthétique spécifiquement féminine dans l’art, qu’elle décrit ainsi : “la vision d’une femme sur la réalité matérielle des choses qui font la substance active de la vie”. Le travail de Bharti Kher joue souvent sur une imagerie qui s’attache au caractère hybride de l’existence. Le bindi y trouve une place de choix puisqu’il mêle le sublime au ridicule.
“On ne peut pas prendre au sérieux le cliché
du spermatozoïde [une forme de bindis trés utilisée par l'artiste], explique Kher. Masculin et féminin à la fois,
symboliquement et conceptuellement... On obtient une esthétique visuelle contradictoire.” Ce signe unissant virilité et fécondité est devenu la parure féminine par excellence. Il constitue ainsi un objet nouveau. Le deuxième avatar ne gomme pas le premier, bien au contraire : les deux se marient pour créer une troisième entité, éclairée et mise en valeur par ses prédécesseurs.
