"Studies into the Past" / Oil and gold leaf on wood / 65 x 42 cm, 25 9/16 x 16 9/16 inches (Each) / Unique This triptych refers directly to the traditional form of folding screens, composed of painting on a gilded background of gold leaf. It consists of three panels, each containing a different element: on the left, a horse rider holding a watchful stance; in the centre, a black sun filling the upper part of the panel; on the right, a landscape of a battle. Altogether, the screens form a strange landscape that the viewer pieces together whilst making associations with the various formal, cultural and temporal techniques evoked.
