Perrotin Tokyo is pleased to present Daniel Arsham’s 31st Century Still Lifes opening August 26th and on view through October 15th, 2022. For the artist’s second solo show with Perrotin Tokyo, Arsham introduces three new bodies of work. In the main gallery, Arsham presents a suite of five new still life paintings using an impasto technique. Flanking the front windows, the artist debuts two new sculptures from a series of amalgamated metals, hybridized forms between bronze and stainless steel. In the adjacent gallery, three movie posters from the artist’s series on fictional archaeology are presented in Arsham’s signature geological materials of hydrostone with blue calcite and quartz crystals.
ペロタン東京はこのたび、ダニエル・アーシャム「31st Century Still Lifes」を2022年8月26日～10月15日の会期にて開催いたします。本展はアーシャムにとって2回目のペロタン東京での個展となり、新作による3つの作品群が発表されます。メインギャラリーには、インパスト（厚塗り）技法を用いて制作された一連の新作静物画5点が展示されます。正面窓ガラス横では、異種金属をかけ合わせた立体作品シリーズより、ブロンズとステンレスを用いた新作2点を発表します。後方のギャラリーには、架空の考古学を題材としたシリーズより、アーシャム作品に特徴的なハイドロストーン、ブルーカルサイト、水晶結晶などの地質物質で表現された映画のポスター3点が展示されます。
From Pieter Claesz to Paul Cezanne, still life painting has been a favored genre of contemporary painters illustrating interests, innovations, and objects from everyday life since the fifteenth century. In Arsham’s debut of this new series of paintings, the artist draws from his own index of artifacts and iconography, building up intricate scenes with a lush impasto style of painting.
静物画は遡ること15世紀より、ピーテル・クラースからポール・セザンヌに至るまで多くの画家に好まれ、各々が関心を抱いた対象や、新しいアイディア、日常にある物が描かれてきました。今回発表されるアーシャムの新作静物画シリーズは、人工物や図像学にまつわる独自の指標に基づき、複雑な場面をみずみずしいインパスト技法で構成しています。
Installed nearby, Arsham presents two new sculptures of the Greek god Hermes and the Italian nobleman Giuliano de’ Medici. Each sculpture is iconic in its own rite, drawing from sculptures dating from Antiquity to the Renaissance. In the representation of Hermes, Arsham reimagines a sculpture of the Greek god from the fourth century B.C. that is housed in the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, Greece. The second sculpture of Julien, Duke of Nemours isolates a portion of a larger sculpture by Michaelangelo housed in the church of San Lorenzo in Florence. Re-casting these sculptures in a hybridized form between bronze and polished stainless steel, Arsham presents the works as if suspended between a state of decay and regeneration.
これらの作品のそばには、新作の彫刻が2つ展示されています。一方はギリシャ神話のヘルメス、もう一方はイタリアの貴族ジュリアーノ・デ・メディチをモチーフとした、古代からルネサンス期までのアイコニックな彫刻へのオマージュです。ヘルメスの彫刻は、紀元前4世紀に制作されたギリシャの神の彫刻（ギリシャのオリンピア考古学博物館に所蔵）を再構築したもので、「ネムール公ジュリアン」は、より巨大なミケランジェロの彫刻（フィレンツェのサン・ロレンツォ教会に所蔵）の一部をモデルにして制作されました。ブロンズと光沢のあるステンレスを組み合わせ、まったく新しい作品につくりかえられたこの2つの彫刻は、腐敗と再生のあいだを漂っているような印象を与えます。
In the adjacent gallery, three hydrostone movie posters represent the films E.T., Back to the Future, and 2001: A Space Odyssey These posters that once adorned movie preview placards and the walls of infectious fans, have become artifacts of the past. Arsham recasts them in geological crystals, as if uncovered in a state of entropy.
後方のギャラリーでは、映画「E.T.」、「バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー」、「2001年宇宙の旅」をハイドロストーンで表現した映画のポスターを展示します。かつては映画の告知に使われ、流行り物好きなファンらの壁を飾っていたポスターも、今や過去の遺物となりました。アーシャムはこうしたポスターを、あたかも混沌とした状態で掘り起こされた地質鉱物結晶かのように再構築しています。

Born in 1980 in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in Miami, Florida, Daniel Arsham attended the Cooper Union in New York City where he received the Gelman Trust Fellowship Award in 2003. In 2009, Arsham began his career in stage design with Merce Cunningham. This experience led to an interest in crossing boundaries between fine art, architecture, design, film, and performance. Arsham’s iconic works meld the past, present and future, showcasing the malleability and power of nostalgia, often through references to moments of the late 20th century. His works provide an experience for viewers to simultaneously remember and question the pace of lived time.
Much of Arsham’s practice revolves around collaboration and altering worlds, and in turn, fusing them together. Arsham has not shied away from integrating the world of fashion and collaboration into his practice. His collaborations include working alongside renowned artists, musicians, designers and brands such as Pharrell, Nas, Porsche, The Weeknd, Adidas, Dior, Tiffany & Co., Rimowa, among others.
Arsham is heavily involved in charitable initiatives surrounding Education and Social Equity. He has raised over one million dollars towards the Cooper Union and has created grants for Minority Artists globally.
ダニエル・アーシャム (米国、ニューヨークを拠点に活動）は1980年クリーブランドに生まれ、マイアミで育ちました。ニューヨークのクーパー・ユニオンに学び、2003年には同校よりゲルマン・トラスト・フェローシップ賞を受賞しました。2009年、アーシャムはマース・カニングハムの下でステージデザインのキャリアを歩みはじめました。その経験のなかで、ファインアート、建築、デザイン、映画、パフォーマンスの垣根を越えて活動したいという思いが芽生えていきます。
アーシャムの作品の特徴は、過去と現在と未来を融合させ、ノスタルジアの可鍛性と力を示している点でしょう。なかでも、20世紀後半の特定の瞬間を切り取ってテーマにしたものが多くあります。彼の作品を鑑賞した人は、20世紀後半を振り返ると同時にその時代の歩みについて考えることができるのです。 アーシャムの作品の大部分は「コラボレーション」と「変容する世界」が軸になっています。両者が別々に現れ、やがてひとつに溶け合っていくのです。またアーシャムは、ファッションの世界をはじめ、さまざまなブランドとともに活動することにも積極的です。現在、ファレル、ナズ、ポルシェ、ザ・ウィークエンド、アディダス、ディオール、ティファニー、リモワといった、著名なアーティスト、ミュージシャン、デザイナー、ブランドとのコラボレーションが進められています。
アーシャムは、教育と社会的公正のためのチャリティ活動に熱心に取り組んでいます。クーパー・ユニオンのために100万ドル以上を集め、全世界のマイノリティ・アーティストを支援するための基金を創設しました。
