Painting during the pandemic plagued times of mid-2020, when all across the world we found ourselves confined to our houses and immediately aware of our health and hygiene, Quarantine was initially exhibited at the Schlossmuseum in Linz, Austria as part of the institutional exhibition ‘Friends and Friends of Friends’, also curated by Epp alongside Aindrea Emelife. Featuring a figure hermetically sealed into a yellow hazmat suit, the painting perfectly captures our collective anxiety and mass hysteria caused by Covid-19, as well as the futile feeling of only being able to passively combat the pandemic by remaining isolated and employing vigilant cleanliness. Quarantine recalls many pop cultural portrayals of viral epidemics, including movies such as Outbreak and Contagion that received renewed interest during their real-life equivalent, as well as exaggerated depictions of germophobia or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
