Born in 1931 in Lollar, Germany
Lives and works between Möchengladbach, Germany and Ibiza, Spain

海因茲·馬克

For the last half century—beginning with the founding of the group ZERO with Otto Piene in 1957—Heinz Mack’s practice has been driven by a tireless passion for light, space, and phenomenological inquiry. His oeuvre encompasses sculptures, paintings, and relief works, including pieces made in the Sahara Desert that predated and influenced the land art movement in the United States, as well as monumental site-specific works. Using surfaces as conduits for the evanescent, his work is central to kinetic art, as it is via metals and pigments that the material transmission of light confirms itself through movement. Mack has outlived many of his early contemporaries, and his resilient body of work unites the postwar rejection of traditional exhibition space with timeless reflections on art’s relationship to the natural and scientific spheres.

Mack attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and holds a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Cologne. He participated in Documenta II and III, and represented Germany at the Venice Biennale in 1970. ZERO’s works were shown in a major exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 2014, followed by presentations at the Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin; the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; and the Sakip Sabanci Museum, Istanbul. He is the recipient of numerous awards, honors, and distinctions, most recently the 2017 Moses Mendelssohn Medal.
