In this series of sculptures, Gabriel Rico explores and illustrates the fragmentation and reassembly of contemporary humankind through the extraction of quotidian objects and elements.
Rico proposes a mental game for the human mind whereby the viewer projects their desires, interests, and ideals onto the cactus. This act reconfigures the sculpture into an obelisk that is neither plant nor animal but something new entirely. The newly formed image exists in the imagination of the observer and is reshaped differently depending on their associations. Each imagined object contains a different meaning and therefore continuously informs and reforms the interpretation of the sculpture. This work is constructed in a larger scale to further toy with the viewers imagination, while also playfully acting as a quintessential symbol and landmark of Mexico within a faraway community.
