The painting, “Josephine & Napoleon” is a painting that is part of Zéh Palito’s series titled: “Romeo and Juliet”. The main concept of this series is to celebrate Love, specifically between black people and couples of the same sex.
The painting is inspired by one of the greatest love stories: the marriage of Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine de Beauharnais, a passionate union, rather than a marriage founded on political reasons. Their marriage ended, however, when it turned out that Josephine was unable to give birth to an heir. In this painting the artist invites us to stand up for our feelings and who we are.
