With Fermented Origins, Rina contemplated what would remain of a globalized and commercialized body once it decays. Thus, when looking at the sculpture, the viewer sees remnants of the body and of industries involving the body. Hair, shells, shoes: these are all bodily items or items related to the body that have been commercialized and industrialized in a global economy. The title Fermented Origins also concerns Rina’s interest in how the natural and the artificial are cooked and transformed in a process akin to fermenting through the new connections made in commerce and globalization. In other words, globalization transforms the body into new properties with commercial value.
