The sculpture ‘Addictions to Leaf’ was first exhibited at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017, within the Pavilion of Shamans curated by Christine Macel. This work reflects on the history of medicines, healing practices. The incorporation of found glass bottles evokes the trade and traditions of alchemy, potions, and poisons, while the hand-dyed feathers highlight the use of animal products in alchemic mixtures. The title, ‘Addictions to Leaf’, underscores dependencies on natural medicinal substances, such as cocaine and tobacco, which can also be harmful drugs that were typically used as remedies. Additionally, the red silk threads allude to veins and blood vessels, representing the bodily systems that absorb, process, and are ultimately transformed by these medicines.
