Genesis BELANGER

Genesis Belanger’s work is characterized by a surrogacy of the body, as objects, finely sculpted and tinted in fondant hues that take on human features. Everyday objects are made uncomfortably familiar as they begin to resemble us. Sculpted in porcelain and concrete and tinted in fondant hues, Belanger’s still lifes—furniture, fruit, and flowers loaded with signs and symbols—are increasingly contextualized by their surroundings, psychologically charged spaces by the artist’s hand. The effect of Belanger’s work is uncanny, as it tows the line between comfort and disquiet, the beautiful and the strange.

In 2019 Belanger was the subject of a solo presentation in the New Museum’s vitrine, New York, NY. She has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT.
