The photographs in Iván Argote's Horses series show horse sculptures in the public domain in Paris and New York without their famous riders. This alteration shifts the meaning of these sculptures, traditionally associated with conquest and military and political power. Speaking of this series, the artist explains: "They [the horsemen] are a reminder that we belong to a nation, a history, a tradition. If you take away the heroes, all you see are images of horses in their wild state, but in mannered, even kitsch postures".
