"Le Bal" is part of the artist’s emblematic series of “rip-off” paintings, which are composed of collages of audio or VHS tapes, in which Hildebrandt creates complementary positive and negative versions of the same motif. The film "Le Bal" ("Ballando, ballando" in Italian), 1983 by Ettore Scola is recorded on the VHS tapes of the work. It illustrates a series of scenes retracing a half century of dance history: from the 1930s, the Front Populaire, the Great War, the appearance of Rock’n Roll, May 68, and Disco. The film is without any speech, and instead uses music and dance to tell its story.
