Lots of artists have toyed with the make-believe of their own death, but never has death taken them so close to the grave.
On 29 July 1989, an announcement of Gianni Motti’s death appeared in the obituary pages of the Vigo newspaper. At the funeral, planned in the parish of Ribarteme at 11 a.m. on the same day, the priest celebrated mass and blessed the body of the young man who had died. Then the crowd spilt onto the streets of the little Spanish village and followed the procession to the cemetery. Next, the coffin was put down near the grave (which had actually been dug for another body!). A few minutes passed, there was a sigh, a silence, and then Gianni Motti tried to slip discreetly out of his coffin. The moment of frozen amazement was short-lived.
People instantly struggled to touch the miraculously healed man! With uncontrollable emotion, people reached out, grabbed, clutched, clung and tore. All Gianni Motti could try and do was steal away, terrified, flee and “vanish into thin air” for a few days….
