The three elements that make up Vermeersch’s first solo exhibition in Japan are marble pieces made to “paint away” their materiality, paintings based on photographic sources of copper, and a painterly installation which treats the glazed elevation of the gallery allowing views in, while altering the atmosphere inside and framing views out. Images and surroundings are pushed hard up against each other and ultimately obscured. The wide-eyed image of that car windscreen now becomes a gesture in itself—de-framed, repeated, and reproduced.
